Tears of Pearls

Straight from Savage Garden... "A bittersweet take on the masks and illusions within relationships-- the games we play and the emotions we hide. Originally the song was influenced by Seal, but the sound soon changed during the recording process. Now it is a hybrid of influences. If you listen closely you will hear string arrangements like old Diana Ross & The Supremes records-- layered amidst the throbbing bass and anchored by the almost dance beat."

Say WHAT? In the original lyrics, there was two extra lines inserted in this song. Right after "that once forgotten twice removed, love will be the death, the death of you," was "Joined together one by one, never shall we be undone." Yikes...
Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments and we stare each other down like victims in the grind / probing all the weakness and hurt still left behind / and we cry the tears of pearls / we do it oh we do it / is love really the tragedy the way you might describe? / or would a thousand lovers still leave you cold inside? / make you cry these tears of pearls
-->chorus: all these mixed emotions / we keep locked away like stolen pearls / stolen pearl devotions we keep / locked away from all the world
your kisses are like pearls so different and so rare / but anger stole the jewels away and love has left you bare / made you cry these tears of pearls / well I could be the tired joker pour my heart to get you in / sacrifice my happiness just so I could win / maybe cry these tears of pearls
-->chorus
we twist and turn where angels burn / like fallen soldiers we will learn / that once forgotten twice removed / love will be the death / the death of you
-->chorus twice
Video Eye Candy International version

Release Year: 1998 - Director: Adolfo Doring
This video was filmed during the same Sydney concert as the international "Break Me Shake Me" during the Future of Earthly Delites Tour. The video was filmed for release on the videos Savage Garden Video Collection and The Story So Far and was only released as a single in Europe.

Did you notice...
  • Darren has a tendency to 1)spin around and 2)be drinking something when the camera catches him offstage.
  • Darren looks like he's trying to hide from someone behind a plant. Hmmm...
  • During the second chorus, the way Darren looks at the camera, he reminds me of a vampire or something. Don't ask, it just looks that way to me.
  • Their offstage antics are quite good entertainment, actually.
