To the Moon and Back

Straight from Savage Garden... "This was one of the first songs Daniel and I wrote together. It was a beautiful, space-like instrumental that Daniel had been working on for quite a while. He showed it to me and I took it away to work on the melody and lyrics. The song came together very quickly. We recorded the song and included it on our first demo tape. Thank God we did because it is probably the reason why we got the record deal. Most people seem to zero in on this song. It is inspired by the life of a mutual friend. Recording the track for the album was a real challenge as we had become so attached to the original version that it was hard to be objective. The album version features members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the outro sections."

Say WHAT? On the first few listens, you may not notice Daniel saying the countdown ("5, 4, 3, 2, 1"). It's 2:57 (two minutes, fifty-seven seconds) into the song. It's really Daniel's only line on the CD so if you haven't heard it, go listen for it.
Another thought... The beeping space sample in the intro... doesn't it sound like R2D2 from Star Wars? I think Darren did that on purpose... I mean, Dan got his obsession in through "All Around Me", so what better way to get in Star Wars than "To the Moon & Back"?
Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments she’s taking her time making up the reasons / to justify all the hurt inside / guess she knows from the smiles and the look in their eyes / everyone’s got a theory about the bitter one / they’re saying "mamma never loved her much" / and "daddy never keeps in touch / that’s why she shies away from human affection" / but somewhere in a private place / she packs her bags for outer space / and now she’s waiting for the right kind of pilot to come / and she’ll say to him / she’s saying
-->chorus: I would fly to the moon and back if you’ll be / if you’ll be my baby / got a ticket for a world where we belong / so would you be my baby?
she can’t remember a time when she felt needed / if love was red than she was color blind / all her friends they’ve been tried for treason / and crimes that were never defined / she’s saying "love is like a barren place and reaching out for human faith / is like a journey I just don’t have a map for" / so baby’s gonna take a dive and / push the shift to overdrive / send a signal that she’s hanging / all her hopes on the stars / what a pleasant dream / she’s saying
-->chorus
five four three two one
mamma never loved her much and / daddy never keeps in touch / that’s why she shies away from human affection / but somewhere in a private place / she packs her bags for outer space / and now she’s waiting for the right kind of pilot to come / and she’ll say to him / she’s saying
-->chorus twice
Video Eye Candy 1st international version

Release Year: 1997 - Director: Nigel Dick
This is actually not the first international "To the Moon & Back" video made. There was a previous, filmed in Los Angeles, that was never released because it didn't come out quite like the guys had hoped. Then this video was filmed. It was shot at an architect's home in Malibu, California. It is actually one of Daniel's favorites.

Did you notice...
  • In the room where both Darren and Daniel are performing, there is a keyboard that is never used.
  • In that same room, there's a red version of that funky chair Daniel's sitting on on the US "I Want You" single cover.

    2nd international version

Release Year: 1998 - Director: Adolfo Doring
When "To the Moon & Back" was re-released in the US, they filmed yet another video for it (making this the fifth "TTM&B" vid) in New York City, deciding the video needed a much more "urban" feel to it. (I figure it was because the last one is a little outdated... don't you? Think "image change".) The temperature kept dropping and by the end of the shoot, the guys were freezing. (Brrrr...)

    Did you notice...
  • Daniel almost never looks straight at the camera (especially when he's in the background shots-- he seems to be looking at something off camera).
  • Darren is shown saying the countdown though it's really Daniel's line.
  • Darren must really love that outfit-- if you watched any of their live performances around this time, he was wearing the same thing about five times in a row.
  • What's with the mono-color videos here? The international "Truly Madly Deeply" video is tinted yellow, and most of this one is tinted blue.

    Australian version

    Release Year: 1997
This video was filmed in Sydney. The scenes with Darren and Daniel in harnesses took a full day alone to film, and only a few seconds of it ended up in the final cut. Quote Darren on the experience, "We spent an entire day in white jump suits strung up in harnesses. It was very painful and we looked ridiculous! The segment ended up being only a few seconds in the final version." The video's storyline is hard to grasp at first, but all it really is a re-enactment of the song itself.

    Did you notice...
  • Can nobody figure out who's line is whose? "And she'll say to him" and "What a pleasant dream" are said by Darren on the album; "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" by Daniel on the album. However in all three videos there is a different person saying each line. C'mon, at least be consistant.
  • Is it just me or do Darren and Daniel look damn funny trying to jump at the camera??!!
  • Darren seems to enjoy spinning around in that chair...
  • What is up with the little hand thing Daz does in the last verse? Maybe he got bored.
  • Those outfits could easily pass off as something from Star Trek...I guess that was intended. But look, even the little pins are in the same spot as the logo on the Star Trek uniforms!
  • Daniel is almost dancing in the background...I hope he was having fun.
  • Could somebody please tell me what's with the confetti thing at the end?

    Australian remix version

Release Year: 1999 - Director: Adolfo Doring
Well, basically this video is composed of different clips of the two international TTM&B vids, extra footage, and other goodies, put to the beat of a dance remix. But it's definetly one of the coolest Savage Garden music videos.

    Did you notice...
  • I don't know what's up with the water effect, but it's cool.
  • When it first shows a clip of the skateboarder, there's a sign on the bus stop in the background that says "Omaha man finds..." and then a word that's unreadable...
  • Darren has officially become a man on the moon.
  • There's a moon always creeping onto the screen...
  • Ooh... two Darrens!
  • The traffic clips are actually taken from the International "Tears of Pearls" video.
  • Near the end ("I-will-fly-ya..." during the "ooooh ooh ooh") it shows a clip of something that looks like it's from old film (has scratches and white writing floating on top). In the background is a cruise ship.
