Santa Monica

Straight from Savage Garden... "This track appeared as a bonus track on the 'To The Moon & Back' single. When we released 'Moon' we felt that the song had more potential than we had at first thought. Then when we went to America, the record company fell in love with the track. It really was written about Santa Monica, about feeling so out of place in a new city but seeking comfort behind the mask of a telephone. We were just getting into the Internet and we found it interesting how in cyberspace you are only as interesting as your mind. You can be anything you want to be. So sitting in a cafe in Santa Monica one day, this strange thought came into being."

Say WHAT? In the bridge of "Santa Monica," you can hear an operator talking. Did you figure out what she's saying yet? It's, "Thank you for calling Disney Land, thank you for calling Disney Land..." Funny, huh? If you're braindead today, it's 2:43 (two minutes, forty-three seconds) into the song.

In the original lyrics to the songs, the line "a place called Starbucks on the promenade" replaced the current "the coolest places on the promenade." (!) Although, that's really no surprise, considering Darren's love for Starbucks coffee!
Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments in Santa Monica in the winter time / the lazy streets so undemanding / I walk into the crowd / in Santa Monica you get your coffee from / the coolest places on the promenade / where people dress just so / beauty so unavoidable everywhere you turn it's there / I sit and wonder what am I doing here
-->chorus: but on the telephone line I am anyone / I am anything I want to be / I could be a supermodel or Norman Mailer / and you wouldn't know the difference / or would you
in Santa Monica all the people got modern names / like Jake or Mandy / and modern bodies too / in Santa Monica on the boulevard / you'll have to dodge those in-line skaters / or they'll knock you down / I never felt so lonely / never felt so out of place / I never wanted something more than this
-->chorus
on the telephone line I am any height / I am any age I want to be / I could be a caped crusader or space invader / and you wouldn't know the difference / or would you
