I Knew I Loved You

Straight from Savage Garden... "This love song is very simple. Nothing else on the record is as pure as this song, and I think it was really essential to include. When I wrote it, I wasn't feeling that way at the time, as opposed to "Truly Madly Deeply", which I was absolutely living and breathing. I was there. I didn't know if I could write this one without having the same feeling, but I did it and it actually puts a lump in my throat."
-Darren Hayes
"This song is beautiful with Darren's falsetto and the rise of acoustic guitars. It has a lot of innocence. It was important that we find that place on [Affirmation] again."
-Daniel Jones

Say WHAT? According to Darren, this song was inspired by a story he'd heard [The Artist Formerly Known As] Prince tell on Oprah. Quote Darren, "[Prince] was talking about his wife. And that, he felt that he really prayed for her and that God answered his prayers. He was 20, I think, and he wanted a soul mate, and when he turned 40 he met this 20 year-old, and they got married and he really believed that he dreamed her into life." Now that's heavy stuff.
Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments maybe it's intuition / some things you just don't question / like in your eyes / I see my future in an instant / and there it goes / I think I've found my best friend
-->prechorus: I know that it might sound more than / a little crazy but I believe
-->chorus: I knew I loved you before I met you / I think I dreamed you into life / I knew I loved you before I met you / I have been waiting all my life
there's just no rhyme or reason / only a sense of completion / and in your eyes / I see the missing pieces / I'm searching for / I think I found my way home
-->prechorus
-->chorus
a thousand angels dance around you / I am complete now that I found you
-->chorus until fade
Video Eye Candy International version

Release Year: 1999 - Director: Kevin Bray
"I Knew I Loved You" was filmed August 1999 in a New York subway which was actually in a studio in Los Angeles(? I don't know either). Kirsten Dunst (Dick, Interview With The Vampire) guest stars in the video. Darren sits down opposite Kirsten on the subway train. Near the end the lights go off and emergency lights on the train come on; all the passengers are worried and hold hands. So Darren takes Kirsten's hand (surprise, surprise!), triggering a couple imagined "what if?" scenes between them in the park. Then the lights come back on and the lovey-dovey is over. The train ride of love ends and they go their separate ways. Aww, how sweet...

Did you notice...
  • The same studio set was used in Seinfeld.
  • When it first shows the close-up of Daniel's guitar, look past it at Darren. Now, somebody please clue me in as to what on earth he is doing?
  • Funny how everybody on the subway seems to just dissappear while Daz and Kirsten are holding hands...
  • Is it me or did Darren look a bit dissappointed when the lights came on?
  • Damn, I swear there is a guy on the train who looks EXACTLY like a younger Harrison Ford! (Watch the beginning of the second verse!) But you know, if it was him it would make perfect sense... Kirsten from Interview With the Vampire, Harrison Ford from Star Wars... all they needed was Meg Ryan and Austin Powers selling train tickets and they'd have been all set!!!
