Crash and Burn

Straight from Savage Garden... "There are some pretty heavy places that [Affirmation] goes, and I wanted this song to be something that says look, everything is going to be OK; it always is in the end. It's like a lullaby to myself and for the people that listen to this record to see us through the dark moments."
-Darren Hayes
"'Crash and Burn' is my favorite song on the album, and it's the last one we recorded. I love the angst feel of the guitars, quietly placed behind the rest of the sound. Its just a good feel-sorry-for-yourself kind of song."
-Daniel Jones

Say WHAT? Although "Crash and Burn" is probably one of the most innocuous songs Savage Garden has produced, its title has gotten it some weird reactions. Upon its release in a country in Europe (sorry, I've forgotten which one!), the title was changed to "You're Not Alone" in order to avoid the touchy subject of a bad train crash (and the fire it caused) that killed many people a month or so before in the country. American radio banned the song (why I don't know... no radio stations were playing it any longer) shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Sheesh...
Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments when you feel all alone / and the world has turned it's back on you / give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart / I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you / it's hard to find relief and people can be so cold / when darkness is upon your door and / you feel like you can't take anymore
-->chorus: let me be the one you call / if you jump I'll break your fall / lift you up and fly away with you into the night / if you need to fall apart / I can mend a broken heart / if you need to crash then crash and burn / you're not alone
when you feel all alone / and a loyal friend is hard to find / you're caught in a one way street / with the monsters in your head / when hopes and dreams are far away and / you feel like you can't face the day
-->chorus
because there has always been heartache and pain / and when it's over you'll breathe again / you'll breathe again / when you feel all alone / and the world has turned it's back on you / give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart
-->chorus until fade
Video Eye Candy International version

Release Year: 2000 - Director: Yariv Gaber
Wow, here's a video with a really good theme-- communication! The video was created to be reminicent of a dream, reflecting on the themes of loneliness. This has got to be the most meaningful video yet.

Did you notice...
  • If you have a Darren feet fetish, sorry to break it to you but the feet in the beginning are not Darren's feet, they are the girl's feet.
  • In the little messages that pop up... some a's are replaced with "@", "s" with "5", "i" with "1", etc, etc.
  • There are some weird looking people here: a girl with BRIGHT red hair, a girl with BRIGHT blue eyeshadow... not to metion that they are all dressed as animals...
  • And what exactly is with the people drinking out of toilets with straws, may I ask?
  • In the Matchbox 20 video for "Push," there's a part where Rob Thomas is running around in a square brick room, and the camera is taping from above him. Well, the same thing is in this video :)
  • In case if you don't know what Darren is signing at the end, it's the chorus lyrics.
