Affirmation

Straight from Savage Garden... "I was walking around the Village in New York City, where there are always little graffiti statements. This one week, someone had written things in chalk on the sidewalk, and there was a line that read, 'beauty magazines promote low self-esteem.' I thought about how cool it would be to just spew forth all of these things that I think about life. 'Affirmation' pretty much sums up the whole record: it's quite positive, but it's also brutal and to the point. Sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down. I wanted to be that literal."
-Darren Hayes
"This song is like 'I Want You' on an adrenaline rush. It's just a high-energy, big synth pop, positive-sounding kind of song. The instrumental is so in the pocket for what Darren is trying to say: life can be really damn good if you know how to play the game."
-Daniel Jones

Avoid Those Embarrassing Misheard Lyric Moments I believe the sun should never set upon an argument / I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands / I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you / I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do / I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem / I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
-->chorus: I believe in karma what you give is what you get returned / I believe you can't appreciate real love till you've been burned / I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side / I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality / I believe that trust is more important than monogamy / I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul / I believe that family is worth more than money or gold / I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair / I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
-->chorus
I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness / I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed / I believe that God does not endorse tv evangelists / I believe in love surviving death into eternity
-->chorus
Video Eye Candy International version

Release Year: 2000
aka the "Tears of Pearls" video version 2.0. *rolls eyes* It has the same concept: concert clips, backstage clips, and other fun goodies like Darren swimming with dolphins at Sea World. And, if it floats your boat, Dan and the guys without shirts *hello* All the clips were taken from the video Superstars and Cannonballs, which was filmed during the Australian leg of the Affirmation World Tour.

Did you notice...
  • In the clips from Darren's birthday party, he seems to get caught in the streamers...
  • Of course, Darren dressed as Elvis is always a sight...

    Australian version

    Release Year: 2000 - Director: Alexander Zachariou
    Here is a Savage Garden video without Savage Garden in it (???)! Basically the entire vid is clips of different points in the 1900's. Like a big Year 2000 thing. Nice idea but easily forgettable.

    Did you notice...
  • I think they linger on the phrase "Give a damn" a little too long... agree?
  • If you have The Story So Far, Daniel mentions in the interview that he would love to do a video (like one by the Spice Girls) that he didn't have to appear in. Guess he wasn't joking.
